Parasites and Microbes

The Parasites and Microbes Informatics team develop and maintain software applications and systems to support the research activities of the Parasites and Microbes programme.

We are a team of 10 technically minded individuals with a passion for genomics – why? Because the scientific discoveries made at Sanger excite us every day. Because the ever-increasing amount of genomic data creates unprecedented challenges that keep us learning and exploring. And because this work is so important in the fight against infectious diseases.

Or work currently includes the following activities:

• Development and maintenance of automated pipelines for the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data
• Development of interactive web platforms for sharing genomic data and research findings with collaborators and the community
• Packaging of bioinformatics software and deployment on internal compute platforms
• Deployment of internal web services that enable scientists to track their genomic data
• Development of training portals for bioinformatics analysis
• Maintenance of software tools for genomic data analysis, such as Artemis, Roary, or Ariba
• Ad-hoc informatics support to members of the programme via a helpdesk

We collaborate closely with our scientific partner groups in Parasites & Microbes and particularly support the large-scale surveillance activities for infectious diseases, such as malaria, pneumonia and Covid-19. We alse work closely with the core IT services as well as other informatics support teams on site. The team embraces agile methods and promotes open source software development.
