Sonia is a Senior Scientific Manager in the Malaria Programme working primarily with Professor Dominic Kwiatkowski within the framework of the Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Network - MalariaGEN (https://www.malariagen.net). Her role is to provide strategic and operational management to MalariaGEN and the Sanger Malaria Programme. This includes setting overall scientific strategy, establishing and managing external scientific partnerships, and overseeing internal sequencing project operations, to support the successful delivery of programme goals. Further she works to establish MalariaGEN's role within the scientific community, provide scientifically astute point-of-contact and support to scientific and administrative partners/stakeholders; and to develop synergies with other research initiatives and programmes.
Sonia Goncalves has a PhD in Plant Biology from Universidade Nova de Lisboa and before joining the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute held a joint position as the Centro de Biotecnologia Agrícola e Agro-Alimentar do Alentejo (CEBAL) as Head of AgroGenomics Research Group and Chief Executive Officer for the Centre.
