Sanger Innovation

We apply our science to benefit society by empowering innovators and engaging with businesses and investors - driven by Sanger Genomics Innovation
I am a Senior Software Developer based in Cambridge with 20+ years of experience building and operating production systems.
I currently work as a Senior Software Developer in the Production Software Development (PSD) team at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. Our team develops and operates the software that supports the Institute’s laboratory workflows, sample tracking, and DNA sequencing operations. My day-to-day work spans Ruby on Rails and Python, with additional work in React, Vue, Java, PostgreSQL, and MySQL. I contribute to new features, platform integrations, reliability improvements, and the ongoing evolution of production systems.
Before Sanger, I worked at the Institute of Astronomy (University of Cambridge) on Gaia Science Alerts, building Django-based systems, operating large PostgreSQL databases, and developing alert publication platforms used by the astronomy community.
Earlier, at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (Germany), I developed autonomous software for end-to-end automated GRB follow-up with the seven-channel GROND instrument on the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope, from alert reception and observation triggering to near-real-time photometric analysis and publication workflows.
I enjoy practical engineering work: simplifying complex systems, improving reliability, and helping teams deliver safely to production.
