Dr Alexander Campbell

Staff Scientist

Alex is a Staff Scientist at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, where he carries out spatial genomics research as part of the institute's R&D team.

Alex’s current research focuses on developing innovative strategies for in situ sequencing, particularly within the context of pooled-CRISPR screens, which is crucial for enhancing the efficiency and practicality of large-scale optical screens. This is a key challenge when working with demanding cell lines, such as those used to model neurodegenerative disorders, like microglia.

His academic background is rooted in developmental biology, having previously explored the genetic mechanisms underlying sensory organ formation during his PhD at the University of Cambridge. Throughout this time, he specialised in gene expression analyses and CRISPR screens in non-model organisms, giving him a unique insight into novel developmental processes and the optimisation of methodologies within unusual systems.

Overall, Alex aims to develop and improve the NGS technologies used to explore complex biological disorders.
