Cudini, Juliana

We've known for a long time that mosquitoes carry malaria, and they transmit this malaria to a mammalian host through an infectious bite – but what happens when that mosquito is carrying more than one strain of malaria? Who wins the transmission race? My PhD aims to understand P. falciparum transmission in the context of complex infections using long-read and single-cell technologies. 

Studying evolutionary biology in my undergraduate degree, I became fascinated by how organisms of the same species interact and compete for shared resources. In my master's studies, I extended the same logic and principles to organisms that conveniently evolve at a rapid enough pace to study – pathogens – and investigated the epidemiological importance of the detection and study of mixed-strain infections.
