Funding
Since 1992, Wellcome has invested in the Sanger Institute to deliver bold, long-term discovery science at scale, by developing and deploying high-calibre people and technologies.
Wellcome is a global charitable foundation, with a mission to support science to solve the urgent health challenges facing everyone.
The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a world-leading genomics research institute and is a wholly-owned charitable subsidiary of Wellcome. Wellcome is also the Sanger Institute’s primary funder (and sole core funder) and, through Wellcome Genome Campus Ltd, its landlord.
Wellcome and the Sanger Institute share common long-term (20-30 year timeframe) strategic objectives that embrace blue-sky discovery research to deliver medical, scientific and societal benefit across the globe.
Both organisations are committed to scientific excellence and independence, coupled with the ability to pivot to seize new scientific opportunities as they arise. To achieve this the Institute has:
- clear governance and assurance processes with Wellcome to ensure strong strategic alignment with Wellcome’s goals
- external scientific advice and oversight to maintain scientific excellence and independence.
In addition to the core funding from Wellcome, the Sanger Institute is supported by a number of external grants from funders including UK Research Councils, charities, philanthropic organisations and the EU.
