Compliance Manager (Genomic Surveillance Unit)

Rachel is the Compliance Manager for the Genomic Surveillance Unit. She oversees compliance with the Nagoya Protocol and up to 40+ Access and Benefit Sharing laws globally. She is also responsible for supporting partners worldwide with ethical and legal requirements necessary to carry out critical research, with a key focus on malaria and covid genomic surveillance.

Rachel is the Compliance Manager at the Genomic Surveillance Unit (Wellcome Sanger Institute) where she works at the intersection between emerging technology, ethics, and law.

She is passionate about the interaction between governance and policy issues and has worked in multiple roles to address the apparent policy implementation gap in West Africa. Rachel’s current role is focused on compliance with Access and Benefit Sharing laws around the world. She currently supports up to 100+ partners around the world with satisfying ethical, legal and ABS requirements necessary for the access and utilisation of genetic resources. Prior to Sanger, Rachel was a research analyst at a policy think tank, borg. She holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and is called to the Nigerian Bar as a Solicitor and Barrister.
