    The Sanger Institute played a major role in the genomic surveillance of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing large-scale high-throughput sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and analysis of its evolution and spread in the UK.

    Throughout the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020-2021 we hosted a series of monthly freely available and open virtual seminars. From using genomic approaches to map all cell types in the human body, understand how cancer develops, and track the evolution and spread of global diseases, our senior scientists and faculty presented the latest developments in their field.

Tom is a former BBSRC Future Leader (Discovery) Fellow at the John Innes Centre where he studied the evolutionary genomics of crop pest host range and is currently a Senior Computer Biologist at the Wellcome Sanger Institute working on the Tree of Life Project.

At Sanger, I carry out genome curation, develop tools to support curation efforts and lead projects making use of Tree of Life genomes to improve genome assembly methods and gain insights into basic biology through genome analysis.

Recent projects include assembly and comparative analysis of bird microchromosomes, identification and evolution of supernumerary B chromosomes and using cutting-edge telomere-to-telomere genome assemblies produced at Sanger to understand the evolution of a major crop pest.
