Jamie Davis, MSc

Wildlife Compliance Officer

I am a member of the Wildlife Compliance Team in Research Governance. We predominantly work with the Tree of Life programme, but also with the CASM programme. Our responsibility is to ensure incoming samples and fieldwork complies with national and international wildlife laws.

In Wildlife Compliance, we ensure animal and plant samples coming into Sanger are compliant with wildlife laws, both nationally and internationally.

This involves checking sample manifests for any protected species or collections from protected areas and liaising with our partners to ensure the collection was compliant with local wildlife regulations. We also ensure that the correct import permits are in place to bring animal samples to Sanger legally.

Additionally, our team checks the risk category of incoming plant samples, based on UK plant health controls, and make sure any necessary certificates are in place.

We also work with Sanger researchers going on fieldwork, helping them ensure they have everything in place for legal collection and transportation of samples back to Sanger.

I enjoy the opportunities Sanger gives me to work collaboratively with interesting people whilst problem solving, as well as being able to use my love of animals in my career.
