Water and effluent
The Sanger Institute is committed to managing water responsibly and protecting the quality of the effluent we discharge. By reducing consumption, improving system efficiency and ensuring safe, compliant disposal of wastewater, we can minimise our environmental impact while supporting the resilience of our local environment and infrastructure.
Our water and effluent goals
To guide our efforts in improving the sustainability of our water use and effluent management, our goals are to:
- Reduce overall water consumption across Sanger’s buildings and operations.
- Improve efficiency of water-dependent systems, ensuring equipment and infrastructure operate using the minimum amount of water necessary.
- Ensure safe and compliant management of wastewater and eflluent, protecting the environment and meeting all legal and regulatory requirements.
- Promote awareness and good practice, empowering teams to use water responsibly.
- Mitigate the risk to flooding with water management across site.
- Increase greywater and rainwater storage and use.

At the Sanger Institute, we are taking action to use water more efficiently and manage effluent responsibly by improving system performance, reducing unnecessary consumption, and ensuring compliance with environmental standards. The steps below outline the measures we’re taking, and have already taken, to protect this vital resource and minimise our impact on the wider environment.
We are identifying opportunities to reduce water use in high-consumption systems such as laboratories and core facilities, ensuring water is used only where needed.
We are collecting water metering data, tracking this to better understand consumption patterns and target inefficiencies.
We provide guidance and encourage behaviours that help staff reduce water use as part of their daily work activities.
Supporting Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations have created a set of 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Water and effluent supports two of the UN Sustainable Development Goals including:
- Clean water and sanitation (to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all).
- Life below water (to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development).
We are proud to support these goals and we developed our Environmental Strategy to embrace and fulfil these goals.

Sanger Sustainability Strategy
Reducing and promoting responsible energy use is just one part of our wider Sanger Sustainability Strategy. It divides our activities into key areas that reflect our most important environmental impacts.
Aligning sustainability with our values and behaviours is central to creating a culture of responsibility and innovation. By embedding sustainability into everyday decisions, we can drive lasting change.
Water and effluent is just one of 12 themes you can explore, each contributing to our shared goal of a more sustainable future.
