Wellcome Sanger Institute

Construction

The Sanger Institute is committed to delivering construction projects that minimise environmental impact, support long-term resilience, and align with our wider sustainability and net zero ambitions.

Our construction goals

Our construction goals are to:

  • Embed sustainability considerations into the construction and refurbishment of our buildings, designing buildings to meet high efficiency standards to reduce energy demand.
  • Protect biodiversity and the local environment, minimising disruption during construction works and safeguarding habitats.
  • Assess and report on sustainability metrics against each major infrastructure change.

At the Sanger Institute, we are taking action to make construction and refurbishment projects more sustainable by exploring and investing in more sustainable infrastructure. The steps below outline the measures we’re taking, and have already taken, to ensure our buildings support our long-term sustainability goals.

Exploring opportunities to make our buildings more sustainable through improved design, materials, and performance. *working with wates – efficiency

Holding Sustainable Construction Working Groups to ensure sustainability is consistently considered in the planning and delivery of projects, including new builds and building refurbishments.

Actively engaging with staff to understand how sustainability can be improved within their buildings and day-to-day operations.

Supporting Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations have created a set of 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Construction affects two of the UN Sustainable Development Goals including:

  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure (to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation).
  • Sustainable cities and communities (to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable).

We are proud to support these goals and we developed our Environmental Strategy to embrace and fulfil these goals.

Sanger Sustainability Strategy

Reducing and promoting responsible energy use is just one part of our wider Sanger Sustainability Strategy. It divides our activities into key areas that reflect our most important environmental impacts.

Aligning sustainability with our values and behaviours is central to creating a culture of responsibility and innovation. By embedding sustainability into everyday decisions, we can drive lasting change.

Construction is just one of 12 themes you can explore, each contributing to our shared goal of a more sustainable future.
