Carbon and offsetting
The Sanger Institute is committed to improving the accuracy of our carbon footprint, and reducing our environmental impact to the minimal emissions required to operate, offsetting the residual impact through carbon removals.
Our carbon and offsetting goals
Our carbon and offsetting goals are to:
- Align our Net Zero target with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).
- Incorporate climate risks and opportunities into business decision-making and financial planning.
- Prioritise reducing emissions first, using offsetting only to address unavoidable residual carbon impacts from Sanger Institute operations.
- Select offsetting projects that support our strategic direction and mission.

At the Sanger Institute, we are taking action to reduce our carbon footprint by cutting emissions at their source and improving how we measure and report our impact across the full lifecycle of our activities – from cradle to grave. The steps below outline the measures we’re taking, and have already taken, to support our transition to our Net Zero goals.
Working to reduce our carbon emissions year-on-year.

We’re working to improve the accuracy and transparency of our carbon footprint reporting, particularly for some of our Scope 3 emissions categories. We’ve undertaken a spend-based analysis of our supply chain to better understand its environmental footprint. This exercise led to a significant shift in priorities, and we are now actively identifying key actions to drive impactful change with our supplier.
We’re working to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels within our operations and embed carbon awareness into planning, investment and policy to ensure sustained progress over time.
Our net zero target is aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), ensuring it is consistent with the latest climate science and the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C. By aligning with the SBTi, we are committed to setting ambitious, credible, and measurable emissions reduction targets that drive real climate impact and accountability across our operations and value chain.
Supporting Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations have created a set of 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Carbon and offsetting supports one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals:
- Climate action (to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact)
We are proud to support this goal and we developed our Environmental Strategy to embrace and fulfil it.

Sanger Sustainability Strategy
Reducing and promoting responsible energy use is just one part of our wider Sanger Sustainability Strategy. It divides our activities into key areas that reflect our most important environmental impacts.
Aligning sustainability with our values and behaviours is central to creating a culture of responsibility and innovation. By embedding sustainability into everyday decisions, we can drive lasting change.
Carbon and offsetting is just one of 12 themes you can explore, each contributing to our shared goal of a more sustainable future.
