Business travel
At The Sanger Institute, we’re working to reduce the environmental impact of business travel while still enabling effective collaboration, learning and scientific engagement. By prioritising low-carbon options, embracing virtual alternatives and supporting staff to make informed travel choices, we can reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to more sustainable ways of working.
Our business travel goals
To guide our efforts in reducing the carbon impact of business travel, our goals are to:
- Reduce overall emissions from business travel, prioritising alternatives to high-carbon modes such as air travel wherever possible.
- Increase the use of virtual meetings and events.
- Improve the visibility and accuracy of travel emissions data to support better monitoring and decision-making.
- Support staff in making sustainable choices, providing clear guidance, policies and practical resources that encourage lower-carbon travel habits.

At the Sanger Institute, we are taking action to reduce the environmental impact of business travel by encouraging lower-carbon options and strengthening our reporting. The steps below outline the measures we’re taking, and have already taken, to support more sustainable travel choices.
We encourage the use of lower-carbon modes of transport through guidance and supportive travel policies.
We continue to promote virtual collaboration tools so staff can engage with partners and attend events without the need for travel.
We are strengthening the way we collect and track travel data so we can better understand emissions hotspots and target reductions.
Supporting Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations have created a set of 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Business travel supports two of the UN Sustainable Development Goals including:
- Responsible consumption and production (to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns).
- Climate action (to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact)
We are proud to support these goals and we developed our Environmental Strategy to embrace and fulfil these goals.

Sanger Sustainability Strategy
Reducing and promoting responsible energy use is just one part of our wider Sanger Sustainability Strategy. It divides our activities into key areas that reflect our most important environmental impacts.
Aligning sustainability with our values and behaviours is central to creating a culture of responsibility and innovation. By embedding sustainability into everyday decisions, we can drive lasting change.
Sustainable business travel is just one of 12 themes you can explore, each contributing to our shared goal of a more sustainable future.
