Opportunities for clinicians

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute has a growing cadre of clinical scientists and encourages applications from medical qualified individuals and vets at all stages of their career. Opportunities exist at a number of levels

Undergraduate placements

Undergraduate placements are available for medical and veterinary students who wish to spend time in a research environment, usually during the summer vacation period. Placements are typically for three months between June and September, although it may be possible to accommodate alternative periods on request.

Studying for a PhD

As part of our Clinical PhD Programme, we provide funding for two Clinical Research Training Fellowships each year as part of the Cambridge Wellcome Trust PhD Programme for Clinicians.

These fellowships are for three years, and salaries are maintained in accordance with recognised UK clinical academic scales.

Externally funded Clinical Research Training Fellowships are sometimes available, and any current opportunities will be detailed here.

Clinicians can also obtain their own Clinical Research Training Fellowship with the sponsorship of a Sanger Institute Faculty member and the approval of the Institute’s Committee of Graduate Studies.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Institute’s Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) model enables medically qualified individuals, who have already obtained a PhD or equivalent qualification, to undertake a further period of early career research training.

Fellowships are typically of three years duration. The model contains provision for salaries to be maintained in accordance with recognised UK clinical academic scales.

Faculty positions

The Institute’s Faculty Model contains provision for clinicians at consultant or specialist registrar level to develop and consolidate their careers as independent scientists in academic medicine. Funding will frequently be via an external clinical fellowship from a major funding body in the biomedical research sector, for example MRC, CR-UK or the Wellcome Trust.

Salaries are maintained in accordance with recognised UK clinical academic scales.
