Chaguza, Chrispin

Chrispin is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Infection Genomics Programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. His research uses high throughput large genomic datasets from whole genome sequencing and deep sequencing of bacterial pathogens to understand bacterial evolution, antimicrobial resistance, transmission and epidemiology.

My current work is focused on the genomics and epidemiology of respiratory pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae to understand bacterial evolution, carriage and disease epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance and transmission. Additional work includes bioinformatics driven antigen discovery in Campylobacter species for designing proteome microarrays.

During my PhD I analysed >1000 pneumococcal whole genomes sampled from carriers and patients a high disease African setting in Malawi. The aim of my PhD was to genomically characterise the strains and to compare pneumococcal strains from the pre- and post-conjugate vaccination era. This revealed changes in strain and genotype prevalence and diversity and antimicrobial resistance in context of the population structure thus providing high-resolution insights into the pneumococcal epidemiology.

My broad interests include analysis of big genomic datasets from clinically relevant bacterial pathogens using a combination of population genomics, epidemiology, phenotypic and functional approaches to better understand their evolution, epidemiology and genetic basis of phenotypes. Specifically, I'm interested in phylogeography, population structure and evolution, antibiotic resistance, genome-wide association studies and transcpritomics.
