Nippostrongylus brasiliensis

Nippostrongylus brasiliensis is an intestinal nematode of rodents, closely related to the human hookworms (Ancylostoma and Necator) which infect an estimated 740 million people in tropical countries, and to Haemonchus contortus, the worldwide parasite of sheep and goats now being sequenced. N. brasiliensis is easily maintained in the laboratory, and has become widely used as an immunological and biochemical model for nematode parasites.

[Genome Research Limited]

This is a Wellcome Trust funded project to sequence and analyse the nuclear genome of N. brasiliensis with the goal of producing reference quality genome sequence. The transcriptome profile of different life cycle stages of the parasite will also be generated using RNA-Seq.

We are collaborating with Prof. Rick Maizels (University of Edinburgh).

Data Use Statement

This sequencing centre plans on publishing the completed and annotated sequences in a peer-reviewed journal as soon as possible. Permission of the principal investigator should be obtained before publishing analyses of the sequence/open reading frames/genes on a chromosome or genome scale. See our data sharing policy.
