Brief overview
Blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma (Platyhelminthes, Trematoda, Digenea) are responsible for the chronic debilitating disease schistosomiasis / bilharzia, widely considered to be second only to malaria as a global health problem and an incalculable drain on the economic development of endemic countries.
Schistosoma haematobium infects approximately 100 million people, causes serious pathology and results in more than 125,000 directly attributable deaths per annum. S. haematobium is primarily a urinary tract infection. Of the three major human Schistosome species (S. haematobium, S. japonicum and S. mansoni), S. haematobium is the most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa.

Accessing the sequence data and annotation
All available EST sequence reads from both the adult and egg libraries are available from our ftp site and may be searched on our blast server.
Sequence data and annotation are available for viewing or download but represent a work in progress. Permission of the principal investigators should be obtained before publishing genome-scale analyses based on unpublished sequences, genes or other features available via this site.
