The Project
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute Pathogen Sequencing Unit is undertaking partial shotgun sequencing of a number of different species of Plasmodium. This will serve as auseful comparative genomics resource to complement the complete Plasmodium falciparum genome. This work is being done in collaboration with Chris Newbold (Oxford) and Mike Turner (Glasgow).
P.gallinaceum is an avian parasite with traditional strengths for use in investigating transmission in Aedes mosquitoes, but a recent progression has been study if its development in Drosophila (Scheneider and Shahabuddin)
Library construction
P. gallinaceum genomic DNA was provided by Dr.Thomas McCutchan (NIH/NIAID) and by Dr. J. Vinetz (UCSD) and small insert libraries were constructed in the pUC18 vector. Both ends of the insert are being sequenced to give a three-fold coverage.
