The project is part of the Malaria Genome Project consortium. Funding for the consortium has been obtained from The Wellcome Trust, The Burroughs Wellcome Fund, NIAID and the US Department of Defence.
Responsibility for sequencing the genome was divided on a chromosome by chromsome basis between 3 sequencing centres : The Sanger Institute (U.K.), The Institute for Genomic Research / Naval Medical Research Institute (U.S.A.), and Stanford University
This work has been carried out in collaboration with Chris Newbold of the Molecular Parasitology Group, Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford, and Alister Craig of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
The first draft of the genome has now been published in a special edition of nature. Our effort continues toward provision of the fully finished sequence, with continual revision of annotation and Gene Ontology association. The data from the project is housed within PlasmoDB and more recently within GeneDB as well as being available through the major public databases.
Please address all sequencing enquiries to Dr. Arnab Pain (email: ap2@sanger.ac.uk).
