The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a proud signatory of the Technician Commitment. We signed up in March 2018, to play our part in valuing, developing and rewarding our highly skilled technical employees, who play a vital role in our organisation’s work.
The Technician Commitment is a university and research institution initiative, led by a steering group of sector bodies, with support from the Science Council and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Technicians Make It Happen campaign.
By signing the Technician Commitment, we have pledged action against the key challenges affecting our technical staff:

Action: Ensure that all technicians within our organisation are identifiable and that the contribution of our technicians is visible within and beyond our Institution.
We host a variety of events for our technicians. We also collect feedback from our technicians on what they value most to help us deliver great value.
We will continue to create new events as the technician commitment grows and develops, by listening to our technicians on what they would most like to learn more about.
Communication & connectivity
We are building a central place for technicians to share success stories, information and news, publicise events, advertise training and to create a strong internal network of technicians.

Action: Support our technicians to gain recognition through professional registration and external awards schemes.
Professional body registration
We support and encourage our technicians to become members of professional bodies in their respective profession.
Funding for our technicians
Our technicians can apply for Grant funding to support their professional and career development.
We also run our own recognition scheme called ‘Stars for Science Awards’.
Our internal scheme allows employees to nominate others. Winners receive £50 which can be spent on Amazon vouchers, spa breaks and overnight stays.
Action: Enable career progression opportunities for our technicians through the provision of clear, documented career pathways.
We are committed to the development of our technicians and we seek a culture where all staff are supported and developed.
We offer a wide variety of training and development opportunities such as our Leadership & Management, Communication skills, Networking, and Presentation courses. In addition, we are developing new internal training courses that will be delivered by our technicians, to pass on specialist skills.
We are a member of the Higher Education and Technician’s Educational Development HEaTED which is the UK’s leading provider of professional development and networking opportunities for technicians.
Action: Ensure the future sustainability of technical skills across our organisation and that technical expertise is fully utilised.
We have a well-established Technician Commitment Steering Group, which is comprised of mainly technicians from across the Institute and other employees from support functions. The Technician Commitment Steering Group ensures that our Institute keeps this commitment as a priority, and will continue to review and develop new and updated opportunities for our technicians.
We also have working groups that ensure we continually improve our delivery of the Technician Commitment in areas including:
- policy and procedure
- events and funding.
We are committed to developing apprenticeships across our Institute.
We have recruited technicians in apprenticeships for areas such as our laboratories and IT departments. Apprenticeships help people in their early careers to get a head start in life by gaining a fully-funded professional qualification while earning a salary.
