Nippostrongylus brasiliensis

Data Release Statement

This sequencing centre plans on publishing the completed and annotated sequences in a peer-reviewed journal as soon as possible. Permission of the principal investigator should be obtained before publishing analyses of the sequence/open reading frames/genes on a chromosome or genome scale.

Brief overview
Adult Nippostrongylus brasiliensis wormNippostrongylus brasiliensis is an intestinal nematode of rodents, closely related to the human hookworms (Ancylostoma and Necator) which infect an estimated 740 million people in tropical countries, and to Haemonchus contortus, the worldwide parasite of sheep and goats now being sequenced. N. brasiliensis is easily maintained in the laboratory, and has become widely used as an immunological and biochemical model for nematode parasites.
The Project

This is a Wellcome Trust funded project to sequence and analyse the nuclear genome of N. brasiliensis with the goal of producing reference quality genome sequence.

The sequencing is being done using 454 rapid sequencing technology.

Collaborators

We are collaborating with Prof. Rick Maizels (University of Edinburgh).

Accessing Sequence data

Data are being made available on our ftp site and Blast Server as they become available.

Currently, there are 170,066 contigs (83.68 MB of sequence) and 1,243,665 reads (499.3 MB of sequence) available to download.

Please note that this sequence is unchecked and unedited, and will contain errors. The 454 is known to have problems with homopolymeric tracts, and these are therefore likely to contain significant numbers of errors.

Sequencing enquiries

Please address all enquiries to Martin Aslett (Pathogen Sequencing Web Master - email: maa@sanger.ac.uk).
