Mycobacterium canetti

The Sanger Institute is sequencing the genome of Mycobacterium canetti strain CIPT140010059 in collaboration with Dr. Bouke de Jong, Dr. Richard Adegbola, Dr. Martin Antonio, Dr. Philip Hill, Dr Roger Brookes and Dr. Jacob Otu at the Bacterial Diseases Programme, MRC Laboratories, The Gambia, Prof. Mike Barer at the Department of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, University of Leicester and Dr. Roland Brosch and Dr. Stewart Cole at the Unit de Genetique Moleculaire Bacterienne, Institut Pasteur.

M. canetti is an member of the tubercle bacilli, with untypical smooth colony morphology, that has been isolated from tuberculosis patients in East Africa.

The strain being sequenced is 140010059.

Shotgun sequencing is in progress, and a database of reads is available for searching on our Blast Server, or for download from our FTP site.

At present there are 80,759 reads totalling 44.834 Mb and giving a theoretical coverage of 99.99% of the genome.

Finishing is in progress; a database containing the latest assembly is available in the same way.

At present there are 76 contigs > 1kb (35 contigs >2kb) with a total size of 4.525 Mb.

Assembly warning

Please note that the assembly database consists of unedited automatic assemblies; it will contain errors and misassemblies, along with E. coli and vector contamination. The contig numbers are not stable, and will vary with each data release. The sequences in the shotgun database are single reads from ABI sequencers; they will contain errors, along with both E. coli and vector contamination.

Data Release Statement

This sequencing centre plans on publishing the completed and annotated sequences in a peer-reviewed journal as soon as possible. Permission of the principal investigator should be obtained before publishing analyses of the sequence/open reading frames/genes on a chromosome or genome scale.
