We have a longstanding partnership with the Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programmes in Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Kenya
and Malawi, and work collaboratively on a variety of projects, many of which are components of jointly funded
initiatives.
Two of the key drivers of these links have been malaria and invasive salmonellosis, although other project areas
include viruses, fastidious and neglected bacterial diseases and most recently, non-communicable diseases such as
sickle cell, diabetes, the analysis of rare phenotypes. The ongoing phylogenetic studies on pathogens based at the
Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute have been exploited in the field by workers based at the different sites. Work in human
genetics has been stimulated by MalariaGEN, the 1,000 genomes project and the mapping of human variation projects. The
links have been strengthened by personnel exchanges and by the transfer of pathogen based Advanced Training Courses to
the Overseas Units.
