Kevin is a Research Fellow of epidemiology working at both the Sanger Institute and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His main area of research is the integration of large population-based databases of electronic health records with genetic and genomic studies.
I currently work both at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) on epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology and genetic/genomic studies. I have a general interest in the effective use of technology and systems to support work in these areas.
I am leading two collaborative Sanger-LSHTM projects,(1) a study of the clinical epidemiology and genetics of diabetic retinopathy and (2) an extension of my PhD work that will allow genetic and functional genomic studies of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) to be performed. In addition to improving understanding of the aetiology of these conditions, these projects aim to develop capabilities to allow the effective integration of UK population-based databases of electronic health records with genetic and genomic studies. Such databases contain anonymised population-based longitudinal data relating to clinical diagnoses, drug prescriptions, laboratory test results and health behaviours collected as part of primary and secondary care for very large numbers of patients, and represent an under-utilised resource for facilitating genetic research.
Other work I have been involved in recently includes the implementation of a wireless Ebola clinical data capture system in Sierra Leone, the analysis of a large Kenyan cohort study of eye disease, and a number of studies performed using anonymised data from a UK population-based primary care database (including studies investigating the association between diabetes and TB, and the association between BMI and dementia).
