Undergraduate and School Work Placements

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute welcomes students who wish to gain hands-on experience of working in a scientific research environment while studying.

Undergraduate Sandwich Placements

A Sandwich Year placement is a twelve months assignment, which usually starts in the summer or autumn. Placements are available across the full spectrum of the Institute's activities and are designed for students who are following a four year degree, with a dedicated year for a work placement included in their course.

Applying for a sandwich placement

The Institute's Sandwich Placement Scheme is open to EU students or any student at a UK university who is eligible to work full-time in the UK. For a list of current sandwich placement opportunities, please visit the Sanger Institute Jobsite. Please note that we do not accept speculative applications or CVs for Sandwich Placements. If you would like to receive e-mail alerts for our Placements as they are advertised, please register your interest by placing a tick in 'Student Placements' on the Sanger Jobsite.

For each Placement, a number of applicants may be shortlisted to attend an interview based upon the merit of their application. If you are shortlisted, you will need to provide a letter of recommendation from your Course Tutor.

What do we offer?

Students on the Institute’s Sandwich Placement Scheme will have access to a competitive salary, range of lifestyle benefits and the opportunity to work and live near the vibrant University city of Cambridge.

Sandwich Placement students are paid a salary of £15,440 per annum, which is subject to standard tax and National Insurance Contribution (NIC) deductions. Contracted working hours are 37 hours per week, 9am - 5pm (4:30pm on Friday). An annual leave entitlement of 25 days per annum plus bank holidays is provided along with a number of other benefits.

Undergraduate Summer Placements

An undergraduate summer placement is an ideal opportunity for students who are studying for their first degree (including medical and veterinary students) to gain research/work experience, usually during the summer recess.

Placements are usually available across the full spectrum of the Institute's activities and are offered for three months between June and September.

The Institute's Summer Placement Scheme is open to EU students or any student at a UK university who is eligible to work full-time in the UK. For a list of current summer placement opportunities, please visit the Sanger Institute Jobsite. If you would like to receive e-mail alerts for our Undergraduate Placements as they are advertised, please register your interest by placing a tick in 'Student Placements'.

However as a current student, if you have not had any other earnings in the tax year you are unlikely to pay income tax. Contracted working hours are 37 hours per week, 9am - 5pm (4:30pm on Friday). An annual leave entitlement of 25 days per annum plus bank holidays is provided along with a number of other benefits.

School Placements

Our school work experience placements usually provide a short period of time during which students have an opportunity to gain an insight into the work of the Institute and to experience a particular area of work. School work placements are often an integral part of a Year 10 study and last no more than 2 weeks.

Applying for Work Experience

The Sanger Institute collaborates closely with local schools and the Employability Partnership based in Cambridge to arrange work experience placements. Unfortunately, due to the interest we generate through the Employability Partnership, we are unable to take speculative applications. I am a non-EU student stdying at a University outside of the UK. Am I eligibile for your Placement Scheme?

No, unfortunately the Institute is not able to sponsor students from non EEA countries.

I am a non-EU student stdying at a University inside of the UK. Am I eligibile for your Placement Scheme?

Yes, you are be eligible if you are supported by a student visa which allows you to work outside of term-time.

Do you support the Amgen and Erasmus Programmes?

Yes, we do offer support to these programmes. Please follow the guidance provided by these programmes to apply for a placement at the Sanger Institute.

Are students who are completing a Masters Degree eligible to apply for a summer placement?

Yes Masters students are eligible for the Summer Placement Scheme.

Can students apply for the Sandwich Placement Scheme if on a yeat out between first degree and PhD study?

No, unfortunately our Sandwich Placement Scheme is only for students who are required to undertake a year in a work placement as part of their first degree.

Can I provide my Letter of Recommendation from my Course Tutor with my application?

Yes, you can submit a copy under the 'Attach Documents' section of the online application form.

Do you accept speculative applications for your undergraduate and school placements?
