Gene (Locus) names and descriptions are assigned by Jonathan Hodgkin and Mary Ann Tuli of WormBase. New and changed names are incorporated into each new release of WormBase. The links at the top of the page list all C. elegans gene names in WormBase (updated for each new release of WormBase) using the following format:
| Gene name | WormBase gene ID | Version | WormBase molecular identifiers | Other names | Status | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| apl-1 | WBGene00000149 | 1 | C42D8.8a (WP:CE04209) C42D8.8b (WP:CE27845) |   |   | uvt-4 | approved |
The columns are as follows (all hyperlinks link to WormBase):
- Gene name - Approved genes always consist of a 3 or 4 letter prefix
- WormBase gene identifier - a unique and stable 8 digit number which corresponds to all gene products at a given locus
- Gene version number - incremented for gene splits/merges/renamings and other major changes to a gene
- Molecular identifiers - either a CDS, RNA gene, or Pseudogene designation, CDS names also include the relevant Wormpep protein ID
- Any other gene names that have been associated with this locus (often from literature)
- WormBase approval status - some gene names extracted from the literature of database entries are not yet approved
New gene names and corrections to existing names can be submitted to WormBase using this form. Email genenames@wormbase.org with any other comments or questions.
